‘Sounded like an explosion.’ Two people suffer traumatic injuries after crash near FIU
Students at Florida International University thought an explosion went off when at least two cars crashed on Eighth Street near the school Wednesday night. The fiery wreck resulted in two people being rushed to the hospital.
Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to an accident that happened around Southwest 109th Avenue and Eighth Street just across the street from FIU.
According to MDFR’s Andrea Rudchenco, four fire rescue units responded to the crash, where one person was possibly ejected from a car. One of the cars also was engulfed in flames.
“Two Trauma Alert patients with traumatic injuries were transported by ground to the West Trauma Center,” Rudchenco wrote in an email to the Herald.
Their condition is currently unknown.
Liam Rooney, an undergrad student at FIU and resident at 109 Towers, saw the aftermath of the crash.
“We heard the crash from our apartment and ran out because it sounded like an explosion,” Rooney said. “The guy in the black car was stuck, and when the cops got there they and some people who were standing by were ripping off the car door to get him out.”
Rooney said he saw folks dashing out of their apartment building to help, with some running to get fire extinguishers for the car that was ablaze.
“The car was in half basically,” added Rooney.
The scene was bad enough that, according to Capt. Delrish Moss of FIU’s police department, the Florida Highway Patrol had to request FIUPD assistance for traffic control while they handled the crash.
