Miami-Dade Winn-Dixie store closed temporarily. Find out when it may reopen

There’s one less grocery store to shop at in the Kendall area after a Winn-Dixie closed Saturday due to an exterior maintenance problem.

The supermarket at 8710 SW 72nd St. remained closed Sunday, according to a the store’s telephone voicemail recorded message, and it’s unclear when it’ll be able to reopen. The grocery chain’s Jacksonville-based owner, Southeastern Grocers, blamed the closure on multiple roof leaks found during a routine maintenance check, WPLG Local 10 reported Saturday.

“The store will remain closed until a thorough structural inspection can be completed,” company spokeswoman Sabrina Sorrentino said in a statement. “We are working diligently with property management on next steps to quickly and safely resolve this issue.”

The building’s property management team, Kin Properties, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last May, this particular Winn-Dixie failed a state inspection due to multiple issues, including a walk-in cooler too warm to store food and a dirty meat grinder.

Devoted Winn-Dixie shoppers have other options nearby. Within a short drive, residents can shop at either the Winn-Dixie in Kendall at 11241 SW 40th St. or South Miami’s store at 5850 SW 73rd St.

Winn-Dixie has a long history in South Florida. Its founders, the Davis family, opened their first grocery store in Idaho in 1914 under the name Davis Mercantile. They later expanded to Miami in 1925 and landed on the chain’s name, Winn-Dixie, in 1955 after multiple acquisitions.
