Miami-Dade police arrested a homeless man after the armed robbery of a cab driver and ensuing standoff with police at a Brownsville market Friday night.

The suspect, who police identified as 25-year-old Mark Dwayne Simmons, is accused of stealing $90 from a taxi driver and shooting him. The incident happened around 8:45 p.m. on Northwest 54th Street and Northwest 22nd Avenue.

The wounded cab driver, who was identified as 63-year-old Terrence Guthrie, was able to follow Simmons into a market nearby, police said.

Customers told police they saw a suspicious person walk inside the refrigerator. Police evacuated the business and called for a special response team to convince Simmons to turn himself in. He eventually surrendered his weapon and was taken into custody.

Simmons is facing multiple charges and is being held without bond at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Guthrie was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital and remained in the intensive care unit on Saturday.
