A pedestrian was killed Tuesday afternoon in a five-vehicle traffic crash on the Palmetto Expressway in Hialeah Gardens that involved a pickup truck, three sedans and a school bus, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Around 4:20 p.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called to a traffic accident in the area of Northwest 103rd Street and Northwest 77th Avenue.

Lt. Alejandro Camacho, an FHP spokesman, said a Dodge pickup was traveling south on State Road 826 on the exit ramp to Northwest 103rd Street when it hit a pedestrian. The truck then hit a black Audi sedan, a Ford sedan, a white Honda sedan and a school bus.

The pedestrian, who was not immediately identified, died on the street. The driver of the Audi was taken by helicopter to Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, Camacho said.

It was not known how many people were on the bus, but Camacho said the passengers only suffered minor injuries.

The southbound 826 exit ramp to Northwest 103rd Street and a portion of Northwest 103rd Street were shut down for the ongoing investigation.

A spokeswoman for Miami-Dade County Public Schools confirmed that one of its buses — which was transporting Hialeah Gardens Middle School students — was involved in the crash. No one on the bus was injured and a second bus was sent to pick up the students to take them home, the district said.

Correction: The name of the school , HIaleah Gardens MIddle School, was updated in this story. An earlier version had an incorrect name for the school because of incorrect information that was supplied to the Herald.
