More West Nile virus cases in Miami-Dade, the Florida Department of Health announces
Miami-Dade has five more cases of West Nile virus, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade announced Thursday.
That brings the county’s 2020 total to 49 infections of the mosquito-borne virus.
Most people show no symptoms of West Nile. About 20% get a fever accompanying one or all of headache, pain and fatigue. The vast majority recover within a week. West Nile becomes serious or deadly in less than 1% of infected people.
As with many illnesses, from listeria to COVID-19, senior citizens and people with damaged immune systems are most likely to get the worst from West Nile virus.
To avoid West Nile (or just mosquito bites, drain standing water and cover your skin with insect repellent or clothes.
