A South Florida synagogue is holding a joint service against racism. Here’s how to watch

Five Florida Memorial University students will join a Northeast Miami-Dade synagogue Friday night for a virtual joint Sabbath service against racism.

The students from the historically black university will join Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus and sing songs including the civil rights anthem We Shall Overcome. Because of social distancing requirements, no one but the clergy and the choir will be at the synagogue. The service will be live-streamed on Facebook and through the temple’s website.

Rabbi Mario Rojzman, who will join in on We Shall Overcome, said it’s important to show that “social distancing can’t stop us from doing what’s right.”

“They need to be heard, they need to be seen,” he said. “We were taught in our Torah that nobody should be invisible. If the black community does not have peace and justice, no one will have peace and justice.”

Rojzman said the Shabbat sermon will be built around the same message.

“We can distance our bodies, but we can’t distance our souls,” he said.

How to watch

The service will be live-streamed at 7 p.m. Friday at http://www.btbrc.org/livestreaming or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/beth.torah.
