Miami-Dade County

There’s a curfew in Miami again and it’s earlier than sundown

The City of Miami wants people off the streets by sundown Sunday and until further notice.

While joining Miami-Dade County in establishing a 10 p.m. curfew Saturday night, Miami City Manager Arthur Noriega’s Local Emergency Order also established an 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew that begins Sunday.

Sundown Sunday is set for 8:08 p.m.

The county’s curfew is 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Especially with Miami-Dade Transit shut down Sunday, the 8 p.m. curfew might have an effect on attendance at the Miami Dream Defenders protest of police brutality at 3 p.m. in Overtown, 1328 NW Third Ave.

It’s also likely to have an effect on Sunday evening services at various houses of worship.

Camila Ramos, the owner at All Day café in downtown, offered free coffee to protesters Saturday. On Sunday, with the curfew in effect and public transportation canceled, Ramos sent a text to more than a hundred restaurant owners encouraging them to let employees go home well before 8 p.m., particularly employees who are black.

“This is how a business can show up for a community,” Ramos said. “A curfew means you can get pulled over just for being out. To a white-passing individual, that may just be an inconvenience. But perhaps to a person of color who gets pulled over, there are chances of things not playing out that way.”
