— NBC 6 South Florida (@nbc6) June 14, 2015Christian Salazar, 24, and Miriam Perez-Duarte, 21, were riding in tandem when the accident happened about 4:30 a.m. The crash shut down the southbound lanes of the highway for about four hours.
Salazar was pronounced dead at the scene. Perez-Duarte was taken to Aventura Hospital and Medical Center with serious injuries, according to the FHP.
A Toyota Camry that was traveling behind the motorcycles hit debris and a tire before running over one of Salazar’s legs. The driver of the car, Winnie Benjamin, 20, was not injured in the accident.
FHP Trooper Joe Sanchez said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.
“We are constantly working fatals involving these fast motorcycles,” Sanchez said. “In a lot of these cases these motorcycle operators are driving in a reckless manner.”
