A fire-rescue worker is a trauma patient after Bal Harbour Shops elevator shaft fall

A firefighter suffered “serious injuries” after a fall down an elevator shaft Tuesday morning at a mall, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.

David Gonzalez, a fire rescue worker for 18 years, was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and was still undergoing surgery as of 5 p.m. Gonzalez was part of a team answering a 7:33 a.m. call at Bal Harbour Shops of someone stuck in an elevator.
