Hundreds of volunteers — including Chris Bosh — help feed the hungry on Thanksgiving
Thousands of people in Miami-Dade and Broward celebrated their Thanksgiving with charitable groups Thursday morning, assisted by hundreds of volunteers.
Miami Rescue Mission — and its more than 400 volunteers — served over 2,500 meals between the Miami-Dade and Broward campuses. That means 285 turkeys, 500 pounds of potatoes, green beans and stuffing, 300 pies and 45 gallons of gravy.
Clients were also given clothes and hygiene products at the outdoor block party Thursday morning, as well as haircuts and medical checkups.
“I am so excited that we are able to provide a great meal for the homeless and needy families of South Florida on our campuses. Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for what you have in this world and realize how you can make the world for someone else a little bit better,” the Rev. Ron Brummitt, president of Miami Rescue Mission | Broward Outreach Centers, said in a statement.
Former Miami Heat basketball star Chris Bosh was among the hundreds of volunteers slinging green beans, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes.
The meal was a group effort. In Miami-Dade, Girl Scout Troop #918 donated hundreds of pies. Culinary students at Johnson and Wales University cooked more than 100 turkeys. Starbucks provided the coffee. Potential Church provided all the turkeys, as well as some hams and pies. Financial support came from all over, including the Jills Zeder Group, Global Realty and Management, Payer and Associates and Helm Bank USA.
At Camillus House, which is celebrating its 60th Thanksgiving in Miami, chefs roasted 120 turkeys in preparation for a 500-person feast. Nearly a hundred volunteers showed up to serve all the fixings for Camillus House clients in a freshly decorated dining hall.
