The sex of Zoo Miami’s history-making baby rhino is finally revealed

The world finally saw one of Zoo Miami’s rarest zoo babies Friday morning.

And it’s a girl!

At about 11 a.m., the zoo debuted the incredibly rare greater one-horned Indian rhinoceros that was born April 23 as the result of an induced ovulation and artificial insemination.

The baby’s father, Suru, tipped over a box with pink and blue question marks to reveal a pink ball, announcing the baby’s gender.

The gender was not originally known, said zoo spokesman Ron Magill. The calf, which is expected to eventually weigh between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds, has been in seclusion with its mother, Akuti, since its birth.

The event was the start of what the zoo is calling “Baby Rhino Weekend”.

After the gender reveal, Magill said there will likely be a naming opportunity for the now unnamed calf.
