Miami-Dade cop killed when his All-Terrain Vehicle crashes into a tree near a canal
A Miami-Dade police officer on patrol and riding an All-Terrain Vehicle was killed Wednesday, when he lost control, veered off the roadway and crashed into a tree.
The accident, which happened just after 3 p.m. next to canal just off South Dixie Highway at Southwest 211th Street, was a single-vehicle crash.
Sources familiar with the incident said the officer who died was Jermaine Brown. His wife also works for the police department.
At an early evening press briefing near the crash site, Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez said the officer was on patrol with two other officers when he lost control of his ATV and struck the tree. The director said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue worked feverishly to try and revive the officer’s life.
Perez said his department was not officially releasing the name of the officer killed because not all of next of kin had been notified. He said the department is heart-broken over the loss of one of their own.
“We’re down, but we’ll dust ourselves off,” the director said.
