A Miami Dade College professor died Saturday after being struck by a hit-and-run driver earlier this week.

Miami police identified the victim as 85-year-old David Hertzig, who was riding his bicycle through Coconut Grove early Monday morning when a driver hit him near Southwest 37th Avenue and Charles Terrace.

He was on his way to teach developmental mathematics at the college’s InterAmerican campus, records show. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition and six days later died of his injuries, officials said.

According to investigators, witnesses told officers the driver — in a blue Jaguar — got out of the car, made a quick phone call and then fled. Police are currently searching for the suspect.

In addition to teaching at MDC, Hertzig was emeritus faculty at the University of Miami and the former chairman of mathematics department.

His daughters were too distraught to be interviewed by the Miami Herald on Saturday but said they wanted ”justice.”
