Miami-Dade police find teen whose missing report went viral on social media

The teen whose alleged missing report went viral Thursday night was found Friday afternoon, police said.

“The runaway, Caro Macias, has been found safe and unharmed hiding at a friend's house,” Miami-Dade police said in a release.

Carolina Macias, 17, went missing Thursday night, prompting a frenzy of social media posts raising awareness on her disappearance and asking for information on her whereabouts.

By Friday evening, her name was trending nationwide and in Miami on Twitter. Jokes on her disappearance flooded the site, many citing her as the “hide n seek champion” and citing the movie Taken, in which a teen is kidnapped overseas.

“With the first pick of the 2014 Hide N' Seek draft all of South Florida select Caro “I'm Mad at My Mom” Macias,” tweeted @_Barbosa8.

“I've been trying to think of a good Caro Macias joke, but they've all been “taken,” tweeted @michael_perryy.

As of Friday morning, on Instagram alone, more than 6,000 posts have been published with the hashtag #helpfindcaro, the page @prayforcaro already had more than 3,000 followers and the hashtag #prayforcaro had graced more than 6,000 posts with the teen’s picture.

On Twitter, her search had even reached Senator Marco Rubio, who posted a photo of Macias. Messages asking for any information on her location have been scouring the site, and Facebook as well, reaching people from all parts of the country.

Instagram user @fallon.grace commented on older sister Andrea Macias’ post of her sister: “She’s in our prayers from Texas.” User @s.a.r.a.h.m.a.r.i.e. posted: “Up here in Georgia just put up a bill board! Praying and hoping everything that she come back safe!!”

The photo first went viral after Andrea Macias, 20, posted Carolina Macias’ photo and a description of where she was last seen, incorrectly citing Scartlett’s Dance Studio, Thursday at around 9 p.m on Instagram.

On Twitter Friday morning, she offered an update as rumors spread that Carolina Macias had been found: “It’s been more than 14 hours and we’re desperate to have our little Caro back home. Please keep and eye out and continue to spread the word.”

“She has been found. Thank you all for your support,” Andrea Macias posted on Instagram at about 12:30 p.m. on Friday with a photo of Carolina Macias at the beach.

Macias went missing Thursday at 6 p.m. after she was last seen at Soul Purpose Studio where she volunteers, at 8762 SW 133 St. near The Falls shopping center.

She left her cell phone inside her bag at the dance studio.

Surveillance video later showed Macias entering a Publix supermarket with a friend, who is yet to be identified, and renting a movie from a RedBox, according to police.

“Everything is leaning toward it being a runaway and we have no signs of foul play,” Miami-Dade police spokesperson Robin Pinkard had said Friday morning.

According to police, Macias got into a fight with her mother the same day about SAT scores.
