One dead, two hurt in Biscayne National Park boat collision

A boating accident late Sunday night left one woman dead and two men in critical condition off of Elliott Key in Biscayne National Park.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission are still investigating the incident which occurred at about 11:30 p.m. when the three aboard the 23-foot vessel collided with an anchored 36-foot vessel. FWC investigators said alcohol might have been a factor in the accident.

“It’s way too early for us to try to speculate,” spokesman Jorge Pino said. “We’re in the midst of investigating.”

The woman, Giovanna Santos, 37, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she later died from her injuries. The two men remained in serious condition, and the people aboard the larger vessel were not injured, Pino said.

A recent FWC report said that 62 people were killed in boating accidents in 2013, and at least 11 have died in accidents this year.
