Broward man charged in Keys hit-and-run

A Broward County man was jailed after being charged in a hit-and-run crash in the Keys that left a woman in serious condition at a Miami hospital.

Brian Bales, 20, of Cooper City is charged with two counts of hit and run with serious bodily injury and careless driving. He remained jailed Friday on $20,000 bond.

His arrest was the result of an investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol, Key Colony Beach police and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Troopers say Michelle Zaccaria, 25, from Burlington, N.J., and Anthony Messina, 25, from Turnerville, N.J., were walking south in Key Colony in West Ocean Drive’s west-side bicycle path around 9:35 p.m. last Monday when a 2016 Ram 1500 pickup slammed into them, according to FHP Sgt. Pedro Reinoso. The truck took took off and Zaccaria and Messina were left in the bike path.

Shortly thereafter, troopers found the truck at “a residence” two blocks away. The FHP took Bales into custody at 8 a.m. Friday.
