Head-on collision in the Keys kills two, seriously injures two others

Two people died and another two were seriously injured in a head-on collision Monday on U.S. 1 in the Keys, between the Seven Mile Bridge and Bahia Honda State Park, Monroe County authorities said.

The two people who were injured — a 32-year-old male and a 30-year-old female — were airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The crash happened at about 5:20 p.m. at mile marker 39 when a car heading north and a small pickup truck heading south collided, Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies said. One person died at the scene and a second person died after being taken to Fisherman’s Hospital in Marathon.

The identities of the four people involved in the crash will not be released until their families are notified, deputies said.

Authorities closed the highway after the crash with some traffic allowed through, and reopened the road in both directions just before 8 p.m.
