An Islamorada woman was beaten behind her apartment by a stranger who showed up at her apartment early Sunday. Her attacker said he did it for love.

The 63-year-old woman, who lives around mile marker 82 and U.S. 1, heard someone knocking on the back door of her apartment around 12:30 a.m. Jan. 25, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. When she opened the door, she saw 66-year-old William Roberts of Tennessee wearing a sweater he took from her car, which was parked right outside the door.

The man then beat her repeatedly with a stick, sheriff’s spokeswoman Becky Herrin said. When the woman asked Roberts why he was beating her, he said it was because he loved her.

As the woman struggled to get away, she pulled off the sweater Roberts was wearing and saw he only had on a pair of white underwear. The man backed away and the woman ran back to her apartment and locked the door.

She suffered scrapes and bruises but did not go to the hospital.

The woman, who authorities did not identify Sunday, told police she had never seen Roberts before.

A Monroe County sheriff’s sergeant found Roberts near the apartment. He was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and burglary of a vehicle.
