A Miami man was jailed Saturday on three drunk-driving counts, one a felony, after a crash in Key Largo left another Miami man in critical condition.
Paul Owens, 53, was riding a 2012 Honda motorcycle south on U.S. 1 at mile marker 101 near Tarpon Basin Drive a little before 7 a.m. when Raynard Sookdial, 31, driving a 2014 Nissan Maxima, slammed into him from behind, the Florida Highway Patrol says. Owens had stopped for a red light.
Owens bounced on the hood of Snookdial's car, hit the windshield and ended up on the pavement, troopers said. Owens was wearing a helmet. Troopers said Sookdial was drunk and possessed an open 24-ounce Miller Lite beer when the crash happened.
He's charged with felony drunk driving-serious bodily injury, two misdemeanor drunk driving-property damage counts and one misdemeanor of possessing marijuana. He also received citations for careless driving, having no insurance and driving with an open alcoholic beverage.
Monroe County jail records say Sookdial lists his occupation as information technology. He's being held with no bond.
