‘Torpedo’-looking device found in shallows off Marathon in Keys
A device that appears to be a possible piece of old military ordnance was found in the shallow waters near a city of Marathon campground Tuesday.
A man called the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday to report what he said looked like a torpedo in the water, said Keys sheriff’s spokeswoman Deputy Becky Herrin.
Deputies evacuated the Knight's Key campsites for several hours while the agency's bomb squad investigated the object. A U.S. Navy explosive ordnance disposal team from Mayport, Fla. was called and took possession of the device. Herrin said it's still not clear what it is.
