Keys woman to 911: I can’t buy bus ticket and my glasses are broken
A woman in the Keys was jailed after calling 911 to complain she couldn’t buy a bus ticket and that her glasses were broken even though they weren’t, according to Monroe County deputies.
Melodie Aycox, 51, called 911 “repeatedly” for issues that were not emergencies, sheriff’s spokeswoman Becky Herrin said Monday.
She also called 911 to complain that a deputy did not take her to a bus stop, Herrin said.
Deputy Matthew O’Neill said he explained to Aycox on Friday at the Marathon Visitor’s Center that 911 should be used for emergencies only.
“Aycox berated him repeatedly, yelling and swearing at him,” Herrin said. “She called 911 numerous times and claimed her glasses were broken and she could not see, although the deputy could plainly see the glasses were not broken. She claimed to be blind, although at that time she had managed to cross the road on her own with no problems. She claimed she could not walk to the bus stop, although she had already walked past one bus stop and was approaching another.”
Finally, Aycox was arrested and charged with the misuse of the 911 system.
