2 more crashes add to Keys demolition derby

The holiday hangover of serious car wrecks won't leave the Keys alone.

Early Sunday morning, a head-on crash at mile marker 43.5 closed U.S. 1 from about 1:30 a.m. until around 4:30 a.m. while Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigated the collision.

On Saturday evening around 5:15., a Big Pine Key man was flown by helicopter air ambulance to Rydee Trauma Center in Miami after he crashed his 2005 Nissan Altima into a Chrysler Town and Country minivan driven by a couple from Germany.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Christopher Todd, 61, was driving south on U.S. 1 at mile marker 32. For reasons not known at press time, he drifted into the northbound lane and his car struck the minivan.

The driver and passenger of the minivan suffered minor injuries and were treated at Fishermen's Community Hospital in Marathon.

The crashes come as the Keys rang in the New Year with two fatal accidents between Jan. 1 and 8. And the final week of 2015 ended with two motorcyclists losing their lives in separate accidents.
