Keys man held in drunk-driving deaths of three people
A Key West man has been jailed on three counts of drunk driving-manslaughter stemming from an August crash in the Lower Keys.
Daniel Sommerfeldt, 32, is accused of causing the Aug. 23 crash that killed three people on the Shark Channel Bridge at mile marker 11.4. The victims were Anna Catherine Sommerfeldt, 36, of Key West, who was a passenger in Daniel’s truck; Brittany Nicole Law, 19, of Avon Park; and Donald Merle Pollitt, 52, also of Avon Park. The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol says Sommerfeldt was driving a Ford F-150 pickup south on U.S. 1 when it struck the southbound guard rail, went into the northbound lane and flipped.
A 2015 Dodge Ram driven by Anthony David Smith, 18, from Sebring, was traveling north on the bridge. The right side of Smith’s truck hit the front of the F-150. This forced the F-150 onto the guard rail of the northbound lane. Two passengers in the Ram, Law and Pollitt, died on the highway.
