Homestead teen hit in Key Largo by car driven by Pembroke Pines woman

A teenage pedestrian was hit by a car and suffered critical injuries in Key Largo.

The accident happened at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Tarpon Basin and U.S. 1 at mile marker 101.5.

The driver of a 2010 Volkswagen, Ashley Ryan, 38, of Pembroke Pines, was traveling north on the highway. An 18-year-old man from Homestead, who the Florida Highway Patrol has not identified, began crossing the road from the ocean side.

Ryan told FHP troopers the teen appeared suddenly, and she had no time to stop. said Lt. Kathleen McKinney, FHP Keys sub-district commander.

Monroe County's TraumaStar helicopter air ambulance flew the teen to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

McKinney said no charges are imminent pending the outcome of the investigation.

Both northbound lanes of U.S. 1 were closed for about a half hour, and then partially reopened.
