Card Sound Road to and from the Florida Keys reopens after deadly crash

FL511

A deadly car crash early Thursday morning forced the shutdown of Card Sound Road in both directions for several hours before the roadway was reopened, authorities said.

The shutdown affected Card Sound Road from U.S. 1 to the Monroe County line, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

MORE: What to know about Card Sound Road.

Card Sound and the 18 Mile Stretch of U.S. 1 are the only two ways to get in and out of the Florida Keys.

Around 5:15 a.m., deputies responded to a three-vehicle crash on Card Sound Road about eight miles south of U.S. 1. Two men were dead, and another person was taken to a hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office put out an alert at 9:30 a.m. that Card Sound Road would be closed “for the next several hours,” leaving the 18 Mile Stretch the only option for drivers heading in and out of the Keys.

“Expect heavy traffic on the 18 Mile Stretch,” the sheriff’s office said.

Around 2 p.m. the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office sent out an alert that the road had been reopened.
