An Indiana man died in the hospital Monday after he was found unconscious in the ocean while snorkeling off the Florida Keys earlier in the day, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Stephen Edward Plopper, 81, who is from Carmel, Indiana, was swimming with a commercial diving vessel near Sand Key Lighthouse off Key West when the crew noticed him unresponsive in the water, said sheriff’s office spokesman Adam Linhardt.

The crew immediately began CPR, as did responding Coast Guard members, Linhardt said. He died after arriving at Lower Keys Medical Center, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies do not suspect foul play and autopsy results are pending, Linhardt said.
