15-year-old boy dies in single-car rollover crash in Florida Keys, FHP said
A 15-year-old boy was killed in a single-car rollover crash in the Florida Keys Monday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The boy was riding in a passenger-side seat and was ejected from the car when the driver, who is 18, made a sharp left-hand turn into the Tavernier Towne shopping center at mile marker 91 in Tavernier in the Upper Keys, a law enforcement source said.
According to the FHP, when the car was turning left from the northbound lanes of U.S. 1, one of its tires hit the median and the vehicle began to tip over onto its right side.
The car slid across the southbound lanes while on its passenger side and came to a stop at the entrance to the shopping center’s parking lot, the FHP said.
The boy killed was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the FHP.
The driver and another passenger, who is 19, suffered minor injuries, the FHP said. Both of those teens were wearing seatbelts, according to the agency.
Troopers closed the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 for about three hours while they investigated the crash.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
