A man died in a Florida Keys hospital Sunday after riding his electric bicycle into a pickup truck on U.S. 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 71-year-old man, who the FHP has not named, was riding the E-bike north on the sidewalk along the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 around 6:30 p.m. when the crash happened, the FHP said.

At around mile marker 99, he rode the bike into the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 and ran into the front right corner panel of a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, whose driver was preparing to make a right turn onto the highway from Bay Drive, troopers said.

Troopers have not named the 50-year-old driver of the pickup. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to the FHP.

Paramedics brought the man on the E-bike to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, about 10 miles south of the crash, where he was pronounced dead, the FHP said.
