A California man was struck and killed by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle in the Florida Keys early Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The man, who has not been identified pending notification of next of kin, was crossing U.S. 1 at mile marker 82 around 7:05 a.m. when he was hit by a Toyota pickup traveling north, said Master Sgt. Pedro Reinoso, with FHP in the Keys.

Paramedics took the 63-year-old man to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where he died from his injuries, Reinoso said.

The FHP did not identify the 28-year-old Florida man driving the Toyota. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, Reinoso added.

U.S. 1 was closed until 8 a.m. as a result of the crash, according to the FHP.
