A man with felony convictions was found with loaded weapons in his car after Florida Keys deputies pulled him over Sunday night, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 9:45 p.m., a deputy pulled over 22-year-old Cody William Kennedy on U.S. 1 near mile marker 106 in Key Largo because of “failure to maintain a lane,” said sheriff’s office spokesman Adam Linhardt.

The deputy smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car, Linhardt said. Kennedy showed the deputy a burnt marijuana cigarette, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies searched Kennedy’s car and found a mini AK-47 loaded with a 60-round magazine and a loaded Glock pistol with an extended magazine, Linhardt added.

Kennedy has two felony convictions, one for carrying a concealed weapon in Monroe County in 2019 and another for grand theft auto in Miami-Dade County, court records show. Linhardt added in a press release that Kennedy is a “known gang member.” His convictions make it illegal for him to possess firearms.

When he was arrested in Miami-Dade in December 2022, he was also found with an AK-47, according to court records. His two-year probation ended in January for both cases, court records show.

Kennedy was released from Monroe County jail after posting a $122,500 bond, according to online sheriff’s office records. His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Miami Herald.
