18 migrants from Cuba arrive in Key West, police, Border Patrol say
A group of people from Cuba arrived in a migrant boat in Key West late Sunday, police said.
Around 9:30 p.m., Key West police arrived at the entrance of Key West International Airport on South Roosevelt Boulevard to respond to a report of a migrant landing and found six people who had Cuban identification cards and passports, according to an incident report provided by the department.
One of the migrants ran away, but was caught by an officer, police said.
In total, Key West police said encountered five women and 11 men. The Border Patrol, who took the migrants into custody, said in a statement that a total of 18 people were caught.
Two of the people were taken to Lower Keys Medical Center to be treated for dehydration.
The boat that the people arrived on was secured by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, according to police.
