Washed-up cocaine found in the Florida Keys, Monroe sheriff’s office says
A passerby found two bricks of cocaine washed up on shore in the Florida Keys Monday morning, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The drugs were found around 8:30 a.m. on Grassy Key in the Middle Keys, said Adam Linhardt, sheriff’s office spokesman.
The total weight of the two bricks was around one kilogram, Linhardt said. The sheriff’s office turned the contraband over to the U.S. Border Patrol, as is the protocol when illegal drugs are found on shore, Linhardt said.
Parts of illegal drug shipments washing up in the Keys or found floating offshore of the island chain is a fairly common occurrence because the archipelago is along routes smugglers use to get cocaine, marijuana and other contraband into the United States.
A kilo of cocaine was found late last month at Hawk’s Cay Resort on Duck Key, also in the Middle Keys, late last month.
Throughout the summer there were at least five separate instances where large loads were found either offshore or washed up on land in the Keys.
