Bicyclist from Miami killed by a van on Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys, cops say
A Miami man died after being struck by a van while riding his bicycle on U.S. 1 in the Florida Keys Thursday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers did not name the man because his family had not been notified, according to the FHP.
The man was riding north on U.S. 1 near mile marker 7 in the Lower Keys around 3:20 a.m. when the van, also traveling north on the highway, hit the back of the bike, troopers said.
The driver of the van, also not named by the FHP, is a 37-year-old man from Key West.
The 63-year-old man died at the scene of the crash, said FHP Sgt. Loren Slick.
The bicycle had no lights or reflectors, and the cyclist was not riding in the designated bike lane, FHP said.
Troopers shut down U.S. 1 for about three hours while they investigated the crash.
