Cellular service in the Florida Keys was interrupted and unavailable to many customers Thursday afternoon due to a cut fiber line, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The agency said in an online alert that data could also be impacted. The alert went out shortly before 3 p.m., and said crews are working to fix the problem.

Adam Linhardt, sheriff’s office spokesman, said there are rumors circulating on social media that U.S. 1, the only highway to go through the entirety of the Keys, was shut down in places due to the issue.

That is not the case, he said.

“Traffic on U.S. 1 is flowing as normal,” he said.

This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
