A Maryland man died Tuesday night after losing control of his motorcycle on the 18 Mile Stretch of U.S. 1, the main highway heading into the Florida Keys, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 46-year-old Pasadena, Maryland, man, who the FHP did not name, was driving his 2021 BMW motorcycle south at mile marker 114 around 8 p.m. when he lost control.

The crash happened on the Miami-Dade County side of the road, about two miles north of the Monroe County line, according to a highway patrol news release. He was wearing a helmet.

Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue paramedics said he died on the highway, according to the FHP.

Traffic into the Keys was diverted to Card Sound Road, the other main route into the Keys, until shortly before 11 p.m.

Troopers are investigating the cause of the crash and whether alcohol was a factor.
