Car crash with injuries shuts down Card Sound Road into Florida Keys on Sunday evening
Card Sound Road, one of only two roads leading into the Florida Keys from the mainland, was shut down for about two hours Sunday evening because of a car crash with injuries, according to fire and police officials.
The crash happened around 5:40 p.m., according to Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue dispatch. At least one person was flown by helicopter air ambulance for treatment at a Miami-Dade County hospital, a dispatch operator told the Miami Herald.
The location of the crash was near Alabama Jack’s, a popular road side bar at the western base of the Card Sound Road Bridge, law enforcement and fire rescue sources said.
Traffic on the rural, two-lane highway was initially diverted to the 18 Mile Stretch of U.S. 1 — the more frequently traveled route into the Keys from Florida City on the mainland.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced that both lanes of traffic were reopened shortly before 7:30 p.m.
Details of the crash were not immediately available.
