A shark bit a man who was spearfishing in the Florida Keys. He was flown to the hospital
A man was bitten by a shark while spearfishing in the Florida Keys Thursday afternoon, requiring medical treatment at a Miami-Dade County hospital, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
This is the second time in a month that a person was bitten by a shark while swimming off the island chain. Another man was bitten on the leg May 5, also while spearfishing, near Davis Reef off the Upper Keys.
The bite on Thursday happened around 3 p.m. off the Middle Keys city of Marathon, said Adam Linhardt, sheriff’s office spokesman. The Miami-Dade County man — who was not named — was bitten on the leg while in the water with two other people, according to the sheriff’s office.
The injured man was brought to shore on a private boat to the Sunset Grille & Raw Bar at the northern base of the Seven Mile Bridge. The county’s Trauma Star helicopter ambulance landed on the bridge before flying him to Jackson South Medical Center in Kendall, Linhardt said.
His condition was not immediately known.
