Drawbridge malfunction backs up Florida Keys traffic two days in a row

The Snake Creek Bridge, the last drawbridge in the Florida Keys, is shown in the up position. A boat hit powerlines Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, causing the span to be stuck in the open position for about a half hour. For two days in a row, Monday, Oct. 31, 2022, and Nov. 1, 2022, the bridge malfunctioned, causing major traffic delays on U.S. 1.

For two days in a row, Monday, Oct. 31, 2022, and Nov. 1, 2022, the bridge malfunctioned, causing major traffic delays on U.S. 1.

For the second time in two days, traffic along U.S. 1 in the Upper Florida Keys came to a halt Tuesday afternoon because the Snake Creek drawbridge malfunctioned, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The agency issued an alert around 4 p.m. Tuesday that traffic was blocked in both directions on U.S. 1 because of the bridge, which connects Plantation Key with Windley Key.

“Avoid the area if possible,” the alert said.

The issue was remedied around 4:30 p.m., but the sheriff’s office said traffic along the two-lane highway would take time to clear.

The bridge malfunctioned around the same time on Monday, again causing major traffic delays for about an hour along the only highway that runs throughout the Keys.
