126 pounds of cocaine washed up in the Keys over the weekend. How much is that worth?
A total of 126 pounds of cocaine washed up in the Florida Keys on Friday and over the weekend in three different places, according to local and federal authorities.
One of the loads weighed 71.6 pounds. The drugs were found in the mangroves near the Ocean Pointe Condominiums in the Upper Keys community of Tavernier, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.
“The large package contained multiple smaller packages tightly packed with black tape,” sheriff’s office spokesman Adam Linhardt said. “Its contents field-tested positive for cocaine.”
The other wash-ups happened in Cudjoe Key in the Lower Keys and Duck Key in the Middle Keys, said Adam Hoffner, division chief for U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Miami operations.
All of the drugs were turned over to the Border Patrol, which said in a statement on Twitter that the total street value of the contraband was about $2 million.
