A man was found dead after he was reportedly swept out to sea by currents Monday afternoon while swimming close to shore in the Florida Keys, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A person on land in the Middle Keys city of Marathon called 911 shortly before 3 p.m. to report the man was in the ocean and in distress, Petty Officer 3rd Class Ryan Estrada said.

Coast Guard crews found him a few hours later unresponsive. He was wearing a pair of jeans and snorkeling gear, Estrada said. It wasn’t immediately clear where or how far out to sea he was found.

The Coast Guard took the man, who has not been identified, to fire rescue medics waiting on shore, but Estrada noted they were unable to resuscitate him. Shortly thereafter, he was pronounced dead.
