A Hialeah man faces hit-and-run charges after Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission police say he was involved in a boat collision in the Keys Sunday, April 24, 2022.

A hit-and-run crash involving boats in Florida Keys waters ended up with an arrest on the Overseas Highway.

Daniel Marshal, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, responded to the hit-and-run boating crash Sunday at Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada. One boat hit two other vessels docked at the popular marina. No one was injured, according to the FWC.

After taking a report from the owners of the damaged vessels, Marshal patrolled the area from the nearby Bud N’ Mary’s Marina to Tavernier Creek looking for the 29-foot twin-engine center console the suspected hit-and-run boater was driving.

The search came up empty.

On his way home after his shift, Marshal stopped on the side of U.S. 1 around mile marker 93 to help a Monroe County sheriff’s deputy working a car crash, Fish and Wildlife spokesman Jason Rafter said. It was then that a car passed heading north towing a trailer carrying a boat that matched the description of the vessel involved in the crash on the water, Rafter said.

Marshal hopped in his FWC pickup and followed the car. After running the tag on the trailer, he found out it was expired, Rafter said.

Marshal pulled the car over at mile marker 99. He noticed there was damage to the trailered boat “consistent with the accident at Robbie’s Marina,” Rafter said.

“Along with the vessel, the vehicle driver also matched the description of the vessel operator of the striking vessel at Robbie’s Marina,” Rafter said.

Marshal arrested Ivan Alvarez Cachan, 38, on misdemeanor hit-and-run. He ended up spending the night in county jail before being released on a $15,000 bond on Monday. He could not be reached for comment, and there was no immediate information about his legal counsel.
