A Nashville woman was flown to a Miami-Dade County hospital after being hit by a cement truck while riding her bicycle in the Florida Keys on Monday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 69-year-old woman was riding her bike on the sidewalk heading south on the side of U.S. 1 at mile marker 90 in Key Largo around 9:20 a.m., the FHP said in a news release.

She then left the sidewalk onto the road and in the path of the truck, the FHP said. The 57-year-old truck driver swerved in an effort not to hit the woman, but the right side of his vehicle, under the passenger door, struck her.

The FHP did not release the names of the cyclist and the truck driver.

Lt. Kathleen McKinney, FHP subdistrict commander in the Florida Keys, said the woman was flown to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami-Dade, where she was in critical, but stable condition Monday afternoon.

FHP troopers and other emergency workers closed the southbound lane of U.S. 1 for about 3 1/2 hours while they treated the woman and investigated the crash.
