Airplane debris found off the Keys. Coast Guard launches missing person search
The U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies are searching for a missing person after a boater reported finding airplane debris in the waters off the Florida Keys Thursday.
The agency said in a statement on Twitter Friday that the debris was located about 55 miles north of the Middle Keys city of Marathon.
The search comes weeks after two people died after their Vans RV-12 single-engine plane went down in the Gulf of Mexico off the Lower Keys.
The pilot of the plane was Thomas Campana, 37, and the passenger was 36-year-old Alexandra Tufo.
The plane left Palm Beach County Park Airport near Lantana Sunday, Feb. 27, but wasn’t reported overdue until two days later after Tufo’s colleagues at a New York investment firm called authorities to say she never returned to work. They were aware she was planning the plane trip to the Keys with Campana.
Anyone with information on the missing person is asked to call Coast Guard Sector Key West at (305) 292-8727.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
