Traffic along U.S. 1 in the Florida Keys was backed up for miles in each direction early Thursday afternoon.

That’s because a barrier for the Snake Creek drawbridge in the Village of Islamorada was stuck in the down position, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said.

The bridge, which connects Plantation Key to Windley Key, was shut down around noon. The sheriff’s office sent out an alert on its app that it opened back up around 1 p.m., but warned drivers to expect heavy delays.

The Snake Creek bridge is the last drawbridge in the Keys.
