A Homestead man was killed Monday night after losing control of his car driving on U.S. 1 in the Florida Keys, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 51-year-old man, who the FHP did not name, was driving south on the highway around mile marker 91 near the Upper Keys community of Tavernier shortly before 10:30 p.m. when he crashed, the FHP said.

The car first began scraping the curb on the left side of U.S. 1 before crossing both lanes, flipping on its side and striking two palm trees, troopers said. The driver was not wearing a seat belt, the FHP said.

Both southbound lanes were closed to traffic as troopers and first responders dealt with the crash scene. The right southbound lane remained closed for an additional hour, according to the FHP.
