Card Sound Road into the Keys shut down Tuesday afternoon

Police and first-responders shut down Card Sound Road Tuesday afternoon into late in the night following a car crash with serious injuries.

The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. on the Miami-Dade County side of the road, north of Alabama Jack’s bar and restaurant, which is just over the line on the Monroe County side. Card Sound Road is one of two main arteries leading in and out of the Florida Keys from the mainland. It wasn’t reopened until shortly before midnight, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue spokesperson, initial reports were that the crash involved two vehicles “with a possible entrapment.” Three people were involved, with at least two of them suffering serious injuries.

One person was airlifted to Ryder Trauma at Jackson South Medical Center in Miami-Dade County, the spokesperson said. Fire Rescue medics took the other person to a “local hospital,” which the spokesperson did not name.

The condition of the third person was not immediately available.

This story has been updated to make it clear that Alabama Jack’s is on the Monroe County side of Card Sound Road.
