Soldier killed in vehicle crash on Key West Navy base
A U.S. Army soldier was killed and a Navy civilian employee injured in a crash Monday afternoon at Naval Air Station Key West’s Sigsbee Annex, the Navy said.
The Navy civilian was driving a vehicle that stuck the soldier, who was on foot, the Navy said.
The crash happened at about 3:15 p.m. in front of the Navy Exchange, a department store for military families and retirees.
Navy spokeswoman Trice Denny said Monday night she couldn’t release the identities of those involved.
“The identity of the deceased will not be released until after next-of-kin are notified,” Denny said in a news release.
“The injured person was transported by ambulance to the Lower Keys Medical Center and their condition is unknown at this time,” Denny said.
Naval Criminal Intelligence Service and the Key West Police Department are investigating and have secured the scene, Denny said.
The Exchange and the Commissary are two separate stores in the same building.
“The main entrance to everything is where it happened,” Denny said.
Due to the investigation, the Exchange and the next-door Commissary grocery store will be closed at least through Tuesday, Denny said.
“Our hearts are heavy this evening,” NAS Key West wrote in a tweet on Monday.
