One rescued from the water after a sailboat catches fire near Key West

One person was pulled from the water Wednesday morning after his sailboat caught fire near Key West.

The fire happened around 1:20 a.m. in Boca Chica Channel off Stock Island.

The rescued man, who the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office did not name, was the owner of the vessel.

He declined medical treatment for minor burns and said a generator on board his 41-foot Morgan sailboat caught fire and ignited a gasoline container, sheriff’s spokesman Adam Linhardt said.

Another boater in the area rescued him, Linhardt said.

The fire was extinguished by Key West Fire Rescue and members of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West.
