Head-on crash blocks U.S. 1 traffic in Florida Keys. Child among those injured
One child and one adult were flown to a Miami-Dade County hospital Tuesday afternoon following a head-on crash involving as many as three cars near a Florida Keys bridge.
Both northbound and southbound lanes were blocked near the Channel 2 Bridge at mile marker 70 in Fiesta Key while Monroe County’s medical helicopter landed to pick up the patients, according to a sheriff’s office alert. The road was back open around 3 p.m., but there were still heavy delays.
The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. The sheriff’s office alert stated more people may have been injured.
According to the sheriff’s office Facebook page, a box truck and a Dodge Ram pickup truck hit each other head-on. The box truck rolled over and another vehicle ran into the mangroves on the side of U.S. 1.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
