Florida Keys deputies say argument over speeding driver ended in hammer attack

A Florida Keys man was flown to a Miami-Dade County hospital Saturday night after another man attacked and seriously injured him with a hammer, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say Timothy Burton, 33, of Tavernier, hit Manuel de Jesus Rivera, 26, in the face following an argument shortly before 11 p.m. The argument began after Rivera and other people yelled at Burton to slow down as he drove his car fast down a residential road, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

Burton got out of his car and struck Rivera several times with a hammer, said Adam Linhadt, sheriff’s office spokesman.

Medics flew Rivera to Jackson South Medical Center in Kendall. Linhardt did not know the status of his condition Monday afternoon.

Burton, who could not be reached for comment, was arrested that night at his house on Jo Jean Way. He was released on a bond of $15,000 Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office’s website.
